Who to Call, and When to Go Straight to Hospital

In an emergency, do not use this website to ask for help. Contact your treating team, call the hospital main line, or attend the nearest emergency department.

If this is an emergency

  • Difficulty breathing, chest pain, a swollen and painful calf, sudden change or loss of vision, severe pain out of proportion, uncontrolled bleeding, or fainting — call emergency services or attend the nearest emergency department now.
  • If you have had an injectable and your skin is turning white, grey, mottled or dusky, or your vision is changing, say so the moment you arrive — this is measured in minutes.
  • Do not wait for a scheduled appointment or an online reply, and do not drive yourself if you are breathless, faint or bleeding heavily.

Before You Go Home

Four things to have in writing

Ask your treating team for these before your procedure or before you are discharged. If you have them, an emergency starts with a telephone call instead of a search.

The warning signs for your procedure

The specific signs that should make you contact the team the same day, and the ones that should send you to an emergency department.

The urgent contact route

Who to call, on which number, and what to do outside working hours and at weekends.

Your medication and allergy list

Every medicine, its dose and how often, plus allergies and any past reaction to anaesthesia.

Your procedure details

The name of the procedure, the date, and the name of the physician who performed it.
